Winter Light in New York

So here we are, my first post that is entirely text. Surprise, surprise. I don't know if I'll be doing many of these but I do have something to say about the last few picture posts. The winter light here in in New York , though rare and short lived, is pretty amazing. Its strong, harsh and falls at such an angle to the earth's surface that it turns the streets and sidewalks into a veritable theatre of shadow and light. The manhole covers become burnished shields, the rough pot-hole patch jobs turn into glittering ingots and even the almost fossilized little ovals of chewed gum on the sidewalk seem as shiny as silver dollars. On this luminous tapestry, the elongated shadows of trees, buildings, scaffolding and people create a living drama, ever-changing and full of visual mystery and promise. Walking the streets, eyes downcast, looking at this vast play of light and shadow one can see an uncommon beauty in the ordinary and the everyday.
